Frequently Asked Questions

Find clear answers to common questions about our programs.

BrightMindz focuses on deep conceptual understanding and analytical thinking, rather than repetitive worksheet practice.

Students learn how to break down complex problems, recognise patterns, and apply concepts with confidence. This approach equips them to handle a wide range of questions — including unfamiliar and challenging ones often seen in competitive exams.

BrightMindz programs are designed for students who want to strengthen their mathematical thinking, build confidence in problem-solving, and prepare for higher academic challenges.

Many of our students are also working towards Selective Entry and other academically competitive pathways, where strong reasoning and analytical skills are essential.

We intentionally keep classes small and focused to ensure each student receives meaningful attention during lessons.

This allows our teachers to observe how students approach problems, identify gaps in understanding, and provide targeted guidance — while still benefiting from collaborative discussion within the group.

Yes. BrightMindz offers Selective Entry preparation programs and intensive holiday workshops designed to help students understand the structure of the exam and develop effective strategies for tackling complex questions.

Students may also access mock tests and reasoning challenges through our student portal, providing additional practice for highly motivated learners who wish to further strengthen their skills.

When students find a concept challenging, it often indicates a missing foundational idea.

Our teachers carefully identify these gaps through guided questioning and observation during lessons, and help students rebuild their understanding step by step. Where needed, additional guidance can be arranged to reinforce key concepts.

Most students attend one session per week.

This structure allows time between lessons for students to consolidate concepts, practise problem-solving, and return with stronger understanding in the following session, supporting steady and sustainable academic progress.

Parents can enquire through the website, email us, or contact the academy directly.

Our team will guide you through the available programs and recommend the most suitable class based on your child’s current level, learning needs, and academic goals.

BrightMindz is best suited for students who are curious, motivated, and willing to engage with challenging ideas.

If you are looking for a learning environment that focuses on conceptual understanding, structured guidance, and long-term academic growth, we would be happy to discuss how BrightMindz can support your child’s learning journey.

Term 3 begins on 13 July and runs for 10 weeks. You can find the full schedule in the Calendar section on our website.

In most cases, yes. Students can join partway through the term, depending on class availability and where they are in their learning. We’ll help find the right starting point so your child settles in comfortably.

The way of learning that is structured stays the same for all terms. During Term 3, the focus may change based on upcoming tests, school schedules, and what each student needs the most. Now is a good time to build on what we’ve already learned and get better at skills that will help you in the second half of the year.

Yes. During the holidays, there may be programs to help with studying, help with preparing for tests, or specific chances to learn. You’ll always know what’s coming up because we post all of our news on our website and calendar.

It depends on your child’s year level, learning goals, and what your week looks like. Give us a call or send us a message and we’ll work it out together, once we know a bit about your child, it’s usually pretty straightforward.

Starting early gives students time to build strong foundations in reasoning, reading, writing, and problem-solving without last-minute pressure. The earlier students begin, the more confident and prepared they feel when the time comes.

Yes. Our Take a Leap program prepares students for Victoria’s Year 9 selective entry exam, which is sat in Year 8. We focus on the skills that matter most for exam success — comprehension, mathematical thinking, and written response with structured lessons and regular practice.

We focus on the thinking behind each question, not just the answer. Students learn how to approach problems, understand why a strategy works, and apply it in new situations. That kind of understanding makes a real difference on the day.

Yes. There’s a strong overlap in the skills needed for both — reasoning, vocabulary, writing, and problem-solving. We can help you put together a preparation plan that works toward both goals at the same time.

ICAS is a well-regarded academic competition. At BrightMindz, we prepare students in Maths, English, Writing, and Spelling. It’s a chance for students to test themselves beyond what school typically asks of them — and most students surprise themselves. The confidence that comes from doing that, and doing it well, carries into everything else they’re working on.

ICAS questions are designed to go beyond standard classroom work. Our preparation focuses on higher-level thinking, accuracy under exam conditions, and question styles that students may not see day-to-day at school. Students who prepare properly feel more settled and more capable when they sit the assessment.

ICAS is available across multiple year levels, depending on the subject. Exam dates are confirmed in advance, and we align our programs with those timelines. Check our calendar or get in touch for the most current information.

Yes. The skills developed through ICAS preparation — reasoning, comprehension, accuracy, and confidence under exam conditions — are also valuable for scholarship and selective entry preparation. It all builds toward the same goal.

The AMC is a respected mathematics competition that encourages creative thinking and strong problem-solving skills. For students who enjoy maths and want to challenge themselves beyond the classroom, it’s a genuinely worthwhile experience.

AMC tests logical reasoning, number sense, and pattern recognition — but more than anything, it tests how your child approaches an unfamiliar problem. That’s what makes it different from school maths. There’s no set method to follow. Students have to think, try a strategy, and work through it. It sounds challenging, and it is, but it’s also the kind of thinking that gets noticeably stronger the more you practise it.

Many families start in the early primary years, when building strong foundations makes the biggest difference later on. The right time really depends on your child’s current level, confidence, and goals. We’re happy to chat and help you work out the best starting point.

Abacus tuition is available through our one-to-one lessons. It helps children build mental calculation skills, strengthen their concentration, and develop a genuine confidence with numbers. Over time, students tend to get faster at working through problems and develop a much clearer sense of how numbers actually work — and that understanding carries into everything else they do in maths.

Abacus learning tends to work well for younger students who are still developing their number sense. The right age depends on your child’s readiness, attention span, and comfort with early maths. We can help you work out whether it’s the right fit when you come in for an assessment.

Look for someone who explains clearly, understands where your child is right now, and teaches for understanding — not just test results. A good maths tutor will track your child’s progress, adapt to their needs, and help them feel more capable over time.

Both can work well — it just depends on your child. One-on-one sessions suit students who need focused, individual attention. Small groups work well for students who learn well alongside others in a structured setting. Not sure which one fits your child? Come in for a free assessment and we can point you in the right direction.

Yes. A good science tutor helps students genuinely understand the ideas behind what they’re learning — and that understanding shows up in assessments. It’s not just about memorising content. It’s about being able to think through a question and answer it well.

Our tutors focus specifically on each student’s needs — their current level, their gaps, and their goals. Sessions are structured around real progress, not just covering the curriculum. Students get the focused attention that’s harder to get in a larger classroom setting.

Yes. When students genuinely understand what they’re learning — and have a tutor who explains things clearly and encourages them along the way — confidence builds naturally. Most students become more independent as they get better at approaching problems on their own.

We start by rebuilding the foundations, going back to where things became unclear, and moving forward from there at a pace that works for your child. Small wins matter. When students start to get things right, their confidence comes back. We focus on making learning feel manageable, not overwhelming.
